4-D/RCS Reference Model Architecture for Unmanned Ground Vehicles James S. Albus Intelligent Systems Division National Institute of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg, MD 20899 Abstract 4-D/RCS is the reference model architecture currently being developed for the Demo III Experimental Unmanned Vehicle program. 4-D/RCS integrates the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) RCS (Real-time Control System) with the German (Universitat der Bundeswehr Munchen) VaMoRs 4-D approach (3-Dimensions + time) to dynamic machine vision. The 4-D/RCS architecture consists of a hierarchy of computational nodes each of which contains behavior generation (BG), world modeling (WM), sensory processing (SP), and value judgment (VJ) processes. Each node also contains a knowledge database (KD) and an operator interface. These computational nodes are arranged such that the BG processes represent organizational units within a command and control hierarchy.

Collaborative Tactical Behaviors for Autonomous Ground and Air Vehicles
Tactical behaviors for autonomous ground and air vehicles are an area of high interest to the Army. They are critical for the inclusion of robots in the Future Combat System (FCS). Tactical behaviors can be defined at multiple levels: at the Company, Platoon, Section, and Vehicle echelons. They are currently being defined by the Army for the FCS Unit of Action. At all of these echelons, unmanne...
متن کامل4D/RCS A Reference Model Architecture for Intelligent Unmanned Ground Vehicles
4D/RCS consists of a multi-layered multi-resolutional hierarchy of computational nodes each containing elements of sensory processing (SP), world modeling (WM), value judgment (VJ), and behavior generation (BG). At the lower levels, these elements generate goal-seeking reactive behavior. At higher levels, they enable goal-defining deliberative behavior. Throughout the hierarchy, interaction bet...

This paper presents an improvement of the cognitive architecture, 4D/RCS, developed by the NIST. This improvement consist of the insertion of Fuzzy Logic cells (FLCs), in different parts and hierarchy levels of the architecture, and the adaptation of this architecture for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This advance provides an improvement in the functionality of the system based on the uses o...
متن کاملIntelligent Control and Tactical Behavior Development: A long term NIST Partnership with the Army
For more than 15 years, the Intelligent Systems Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has worked closely with the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on architectures and technology development for intelligent control of unmanned vehicle systems. During the early 1990’s, NIST developed techniques for retrotraverse of trajectories recorded using teleoperation. In the l...

The level of automation in ground combat vehicles being developed for the Army's objective force is greatly increased over the Army's legacy force. This automation is taking many forms in emerging ground vehicles; varying from operator decision aides to fully autonomous unmanned systems. The development of these intelligent ground vehicles requires a thorough understanding of all of the intelli...
